In the spirit of “Christmas in July,” we’re presenting you with an SEO checklist that will help your business shine brightly in the digital landscape. Think of it as your mid-year boost to online visibility and search engine rankings!

Why SEO Matters

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the magic that makes your website more visible to people using search engines like Google. Good SEO practices can:

  • drive organic traffic
  • increase brand awareness
  • and ultimately lead to more conversions and sales.

But keeping up with SEO can feel like a daunting task, especially with frequent updates to algorithms and best practices.

The Great Google Leak of 2024

There was a huge shakeup in the SEO world in May due to a massive leak of about 2,500 internal documents pertaining to Google’s algorithms. It revealed a ton of secrets about how Google decides which websites come up first in search results – including factors Google had previously denied.

For instance:

  • Google claimed it doesn’t use a “domain authority” metric, but the docs reveal they do. It’s called “siteAuthority.”
  • Google previously said clicks don’t affect rankings, however there’s a whole system called NavBoost that uses click data to change search results.
  • Google denied having a “sandbox” that holds back new sites, but yep: the docs confirm it exists.
  • Google also assured us Chrome data isn’t used for ranking. Surprise! It is.

So what does this revelation mean? Raney Day Design’s own SEO expert ensures that it’s important to trust your instincts. Creating great content and promoting it well is still the best approach when it comes to tracking SEO data. Experiment to see what works.

The Ultimate SEO Checklist

Here’s your SEO checklist to ensure your website is optimized for maximum visibility. Follow these steps to give your site the boost it needs!

1. Keyword Research and Optimization

To identify primary keywords, use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to find keywords relevant to your industry. Don’t forget about long-tail keywords; they often have less competition and can bring in more targeted traffic. Naturally integrate these keywords into your content, including headers, paragraphs, and meta descriptions.

Say you work in the travel and tourism industry. The graphic below explains examples of primary and long-tail keywords to help understand the difference between the two.

2. On-Page SEO

Title Tags: Make sure each page has a unique title tag that includes your primary keyword.

Meta Descriptions: Write compelling meta descriptions that incorporate keywords and encourage clicks.

Header Tags: Use H1 tags for main titles and H2, H3 tags for subheadings to structure your content clearly.

3. Quality Content Creation

Creating content that’s both informative and engaging is key to capturing your audience’s interest.

Think of it like this: you want your readers to feel like they’re having a chat with a knowledgeable friend, not reading a dry textbook. Keep things lively and valuable!

Also, don’t let your blog gather dust—regular updates with fresh content are essential to keep things exciting and relevant.

And why stop at just words? Spice things up with images, videos, infographics, and other multimedia elements to make the user experience even more enjoyable and dynamic.

4. Mobile Optimization

Let’s talk about making your website a star on every device!

First, ensure your website is mobile-friendly and responsive on all devices, so it looks amazing whether someone’s on their phone, tablet, or desktop.

Don’t let slow loading times drag you down—optimize your site’s loading speed with tools like Google PageSpeed Insights. This means compressing images, enabling browser caching, and reducing redirects to keep things running smooth and fast. Your visitors will love the quick and seamless experience!

5. Technical SEO

Let’s make sure your site gets the VIP treatment it deserves! Start by creating and submitting an XML sitemap to search engines—think of it as giving them a treasure map to all your best content.

Next, check that your robots.txt file is correctly configured so these search engines can easily explore your site, kind of like giving them the green light to roam around.

And don’t forget to secure your site with HTTPS; it’s like putting a high-tech security system in place to protect your visitors’ data and give your rankings a sweet boost.

Now let’s talk about link building on your site. We have internal and external links.

Internal Links: Use internal links to guide visitors to other relevant pages on your site.

External Links: Earn backlinks from reputable websites to increase your site’s authority. Guest blogging, influencer partnerships, and creating shareable content can help.

And it’s also VERY important to regularly check and fix any broken links on your site.

7. Local SEO

Local SEO is all about boosting your visibility in local search results, making it easier for nearby customers to find and choose your business.  It’s like putting up a neon sign that says, “We’re right here!”—helping you attract more foot traffic, calls, and visits from customers in your area.

So how can you improve your chances of appearing when locals search for products or services like yours?

  • Google My Business: Claim and optimize your Google My Business listing.
  • Local Keywords: Use local keywords in your content and meta tags.
  • NAP Consistency: Ensure your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) are consistent across all online directories.

8. User Experience (UX)

Let’s make your website a breeze to use! Create a user-friendly navigation structure so visitors can easily find what they’re looking for. Make sure your call-to-action buttons are clear and compelling—think of them as your virtual cheerleaders, guiding users to take the next step.

And don’t forget about accessibility; ensure your site is inclusive and easy to use for everyone, including those with disabilities. This way, you’ll create a welcoming and efficient experience for all your visitors.
